In 2017, one of the longest heat waves of the last twenty years was recorded on the Peruvian coast, associated with the El NiƱo climate pattern. Heatwaves cause dehydration, exhaustion, and heatstroke, and increase thermal loads on buildings and surface waters.
A study estimated that nearly 37,000 deaths occur each year due to heat-related illnesses in Latin America.[1]
