PAHO has evaluated the exposure to natural hazards of more than twenty thousand hospitals (n=20,396) in the Americas region, of which 88% were classified in some decile of exposure to at least one hazard, of which flooding is the most important, followed by hurricanes, landslides, seismic and volcanic activity. Furthermore, 43% of these hospitals are located in areas of high exposure, which makes it necessary for them to identify and have mitigation actions and a high level of preparedness to face the risks derived from climate change.
